Heart of Borneo: Reconnecting conservation areas, protecting biodiversity, and improving forest management in Malaysia
In Sabah, the UNDP-supported, Global Environment Facility-financed project, Biodiversity conservation in multiple-use forest landscapes, covers 261,264 ha of mostly contiguous forest.Working closely with the Sabah Forestry Department and the Sabah Foundation, the project area was chosen as the most strategic forest area to strengthen conservation. This area also represents one of the most important remaining forest landscapes in the Heart of Borneo. The area connects three renowned protected areas in Sabah: the Maliau Basin Conservation Area (58,840 ha) to the West, the Danum Valley Conservation Area (43,800 ha) to the East, and the Imbak Canyon Conservation Area (16,750 ha) to the North.
